The Worst (and Best) way to pick a Charity this Year

Ken Burger, President and CEO of Charitynavigator, an American independent charity evaluator, blogs on a major problem in choosing which nonprofit to donate to. He observes that focusing on nonprofit finances, if not supplemented by other information, can lead a donor to make the wrong decision.

He explains how Charitynavigator is going to change its rating system so that it is informed by three factors: the nonprofit's financial health, its accountability procedures and the outcomes it achieves. He emphasizes that the nonprofit sector must get past the notion of doing “good work” with no accountability and the idea that nonprofits are too complex or unique to be measured.

Keystone is partnering with Charitynavigator to develop a constituency voice element to the revised rating model. Note a correction to the article, David Bonbright is not on the Advisory Board overseeing the revamp.
